The Great Flowing River: A Harmonious Blend of Music and Design

Residential Interior Design Inspired by Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier

The concepts of flowing water and time are transformed into ever-changing, free rhythm in the space. The designing team, inspired by the father of music Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier (“The Old Testament” of the piano), combines it with the visual construction of black and white piano keys. A theme is thus highlighted, which in turn presents an avant-garde, smooth and harmonious rhythm.

The Great Flowing River, designed by Shih-Yu Chen and Chih-Hung Chien of Mori Design, is a residential interior design that seamlessly blends music and architecture. Located by the Xindian River close to the Shida Shopping Zone in New Taipei City, this unique space reflects the beauty of its surroundings while incorporating elements of Japanese and Western design.

The facade of the building, made of Seves glass tiles manufactured in Italy, reflects the sparkling clear water of the river, bringing the beautiful riverbank scenery into the interior. The intertwinement of the East and the West is achieved through the use of Japanese SA fair-faced concrete, giving the structure a distinct and exceptional character.

Inside, the design team has created a space that harmonizes with the rhythm of music. The metal ceiling, with its ripple patterns, mimics the ripples in the river, connecting the interior with the outdoors and creating a sense of harmony. Mirrors and carefully placed lighting enhance the space, making it appear larger and transforming its appearance with the changing natural environment.

To maximize functionality, the fair-faced concrete wall is supported by a steel structure, allowing the audio-visual cabinet to serve as both storage and seating. The warm wooden tones add a touch of coziness to the space. The combination of fair-faced concrete and crystal glass tiles, both inside and outside the building, creates a seamless integration of materials.

The layout of the space was reorganized to expand the open-plan public area, meeting the homeowner's needs for entertaining guests. A large straight plate of stainless steel forms an image of black and white piano keys, playing a resonant sonata that echoes the gurgling water overflowing on the ripple ceiling.

The Great Flowing River is not only a visually stunning design but also a winner of the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This award recognizes the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With its unique blend of music, architecture, and nature, The Great Flowing River is a testament to the power of design to create harmonious and inspiring spaces.
